During the month of February we will be introducing and learning a song called "I Will Boast in Christ" written by Scott Ligertwood, and Rueben Morgan. The song is based on the scripture written by Paul in Galatians 6:14 which proclaims that he will not boast in anything but the cross of Jesus Christ.
The story behind Paul's passionate statement of allegiance to Jesus has to do with an argument that was taking place among the Jewish Christians and the Gentile Christians of that day. The argument was focused on the issue of circumcision and wether it was a mandatory stipulation of salvation. Simply stated, Paul is proclaiming that nothing can save us except the cross of Jesus Christ. It is His sacrifice, His death, and His resurrection, that saves and nothing else.
The issue of circumcision is not one we struggle with today, but I do think that other things such as traditions, rules, or even "good works" can all become hindrances. All of these things can be very good and have great value, but when they are attached to or associated with our ability to be saved, they have misplace value. We are not capable of doing anything that could possible add to or supplement the beautiful free gift of salvation that has already been given to us.
Acts 4:12 says "There is salvation in no one else! God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be saved."
This is all such good news for us. We do not have to try harder, do more, look right, be the best or do anything to qualify ourselves for salvation. We are sinners, therefore we are qualified to accept salvation through the name of Jesus. He did it all for us. What we can do is accept this gift humbly and then learn to live with a heart of gratitude that will faithfully serve and honor the name that saved us.
So this month as we sing "I will boast in Christ alone, His righteousness and not my own..." I pray that you will have a renewed sense of joy and assurance in your salvation. As Christians we are called to love like Jesus loved and simply share the good news of what Jesus has done for us. May we never boast in our own abilities, but only in that of Jesus who loves and saves us every day.
