This service you perform...
If you know me very well, you will know that the following is one of my favorite verses in the Bible.
This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs
of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions
of thanks to God. 2 Corinthians 9:12 (NIV)
I am so thankful for the many people who embrace the essence of this verse as they engage not only in ministry, but serving within God's kingdom. Each week at First Christian Church we have well over 100 people who serve through teaching and volunteering in many ways.
While we can understand from 2 Corinthians 9:12 that serving is a way to express our thanks to God, we must also understand we are supply the needs of the Lord's people. But it even goes farther than that.
Each time you serve, you are often helping to reach those who may not believe yet. Serving in the nursery and preschool areas, baking communion bread, welcoming people at the door, or bringing something you've baked at home for coffee house is so important to the new and repeat guests.
We want guests to focus on God's word and worship. But to help them move into that place, we need to make sure they feel welcomed and loved, positive about leaving their children in a safe and friendly environment with people who care for their child, and surrounded by people that are filled with love and grace for people with imperfect lives. You even serve just by introducing yourself to someone next to you...when you are not specifically volunteering.
While we might like to think you volunteer because of our great leadership, in reality, I hope it is because you want to make a positive impression on our guests, on behalf of God. Then the gospel message can not only be heard each time we gather, but the love of God is also shown through your love to serve others.
Always know that I, as well as the leadership and staff of First Christian Church appreciate your willingness to serve...us, other believers and most of all, our guests who are here each week.
